Sometimes simple repairs left unattended can result in major problems with large bills. For example a $35.00 oil change neglected long enough could lead to a $5000.00 repair job. How is that possible? During an oil change a professional mechanic will note any external areas where fluid is collecting. A good mechanic will find the source of fluids leaks and diagnose a problem such as a defective transmission seal, engine oil seal, or radiator leak. Any one of these leaks could result in a seized motor or damaged transmission gears. Those rebuilds can cost anywhere from $500.00 to $5000.00
If you already know you are leaking engine oil, transmission fluid or radiator coolant the following guide could help you to avoid expensive repairs on your own.
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
1.
Determine where the leak is coming from. Place a large sheet of cardboard under the engine and let sit for at least an hour. Trace the oil spot(s) on the cardboard directly up and find the leak's origin. Be sure when you check for the source you remember the leak could be higher then where you initially see the drop.
2.
Tighten all valves and gaskets if the leak is from a base, as this is most likely the issue. Point the bottle of sealant at the base of the line and spray three one-second bursts on one side, then another three bursts on the other. Allow the sealant to dry.
3.
Seal the line if the leak comes from there. Point the sealant bottle at the line where the crack is and spray three two-second bursts. Place the adhesive side of the line patch over the leak and wrap it around the line. Allow several moments for the adhesive and sealant to bond.
